The Texas Brigades camps are at the forefront of conservation in our state, empowering high schoolers with the knowledge and guidance needed to be the next stewards of our natural resources.
The camps center around wildlife of all shapes and sizes, including quail, deer, ducks, bass and this year redfish and speckled trout.
The Brigades have added the Coastal Brigade Camp, which will be held July 26-30 at the newly updated Sea Scout Base in Galveston. The camp is similar in scope and message to the other camps, with hands-on activities and guidance from top wildlife and natural resource professionals in Texas.
Included in the curriculum are fish identification techniques, boater and angler safety, photography, conservation and land stewardship. The camp also includes training on coastal habitat management, fisheries management, coastal ecology and saltwater fishing. In addition to those outstanding conservation-based topics, there also is a life skills component consisting of leadership, team-building, critical thinking, public speaking and communication.
The camp has spots for 30 youths ages 13-17. The deadline to apply is March 15 and students can submit applications online and by mail. Applicants must commit to conducting a minimum of three educational programs when they return home.
