A Missouri City man was ordered to pay a $15,000 fine and was placed on three years probation for illegally possessing a bald eagle, which he intended to train for use in falconry.

Prosecutors in Corpus Christi said a judge sentenced Sam Mathew, 53, on Monday, according to this Associated Press report.

Mathew was convicted of violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in December. Evidence indicated there was an active bald eagle nest on Mathew’s property and he researched how to capture the animal, according to the report.
